the perfect keyboard layout
why is 60% best keyboard layout
think about it your keyboard is prolly big it has a lot of keys , but do you need all of them the answer to that question is the 60% keyb
its so small and efficient its the best kind of keyboard for efficiency and makes it a reliable one at that
so here take a look at boring layout
lets make some modifications shall we function row is a waste too hard to reach , so u could combine it with the numbers row with fn function key as a modifier
home pgu pgd end end and stuff is rarely used so why not add it as a subkey in a different layer with fn key as a modifier to get to those actions ,backtick tilda and escape could be the same key , tilda is rarely used anyways
arrow keys are infefficient , you have to take your hands of the home row , so its better to just use wasd or hjkl why dont we map arrow keys to wasd with fn keys as modifier we got rid of so much space and we increased reachability of our keys
you have got the best keyborad layout fr 60%
for those who people saying there arent enough macros in 60% keyboards yall dead wrong , my system is entirely driven by macros and stuff cause i use arch (btw) on a tiling window manager and tmux and neovim just fine there are enough keys for more than enough shortcurs like bro you dont need 3 rotating knobs to controll volume thats too far to reach
so a 60% keyboard needs some adjusting time but once you adjust its perfect you wont need another keyboard ever trust
pre-requisites
obviously with a 60% keyboard youll have to shift some of your workflow around
-
step 1 ) neovim everything hjkl is your friend once you get used to it arrow key feels like a pain its so easy to use ,just some initial learning curve
- default editor : neovim
- default pdfviewer : zathura
- default file explorer : lf or ranger
- browser should have vimium plugin
- also a terminal that supports vim mode
and there you have it all things are now vim like use hjkl but also get used to using wasd with function keys if thats too fustrating ihjk in the other side with custom keybinds
is this learning curve worth it
yes in the end you get to adapt to a new workflow where you reach every single part of the keyboad with so much ease and you rarely need to lift your hand of the home row
also youll adapt to a keyboard driven workflow with less touchpad usage ideal for a guy who uses touchpad for everything like a laptop user
here are my insane shortcuts for each apps
i am writing this down if i happen to loose all my memory one day lmaoo
basic actions
menu + < : lower volume
menu + > : increment volume
menu + m : increase brightness of screen
menu+shift+m: decrease brightness of screen
why m cause there happens to be a sun symbol on it cause keyboard due to its rgb brightness fucntionality (fn+m)
you have so much keys to bind tho litterally all of fn key s a new layer and so is menu key
my shortcuts for sway focuses ofn windows key as leader , while nvim uses space and tmux its good old ctrl b
